Geek Central with a Chick on the side

July 7, 2008

Over the weekend I had the honour of co-hosting my friend’s ( Jen the Guy) podcast, Geek Central.  He invited me onto his podcast to discuss Greek as a season one overview.  As many of you may know from my gratuitous pimping, I host Greek Speak, a podcast dealing with all things Greek.  The recording of the podcast was a blast.  Just a warning though as there are spoilers, so I would not recommend you listen to this if you haven’t seen all of season one and want to remain “unspoiled”.

Jen is also the host of a great Lost podcast called The Hyrdra Cooler and he is re-booting his Geek Central podcast with the aim of discussing all things pop culture ridden.  Geek Central can be found on iTunes and also via his homepage.  You can contact Jen via geekcentralpodcast@gmail.com and you can also visit his blog at http://geekcentralpodcast.blogspot.com or even visit the shared forum at http://thehydracoolerpodcast.forumwww.com and join to discuss tons of different topics.

Thanks again to Jen for the invite and allowing me to gush and analyse Greek with another fan!  I look forward to hearing Crystal co-hosting an episode with him over the fantastic Bones.

Friday Night Lights – A Chick’s Perspective

July 4, 2008

Here as promised is another review to keep you company til we release another podcast ep.  This is all about another show with very little farefare that you should be watching if you have a taste for quality programming.  Friday Night Lights.  It was a great movie released in 2004 starring Billy Bob Thornton as the Coach of a high school football team struggling deep in the heart of Texas.  It was real, gritty and the acting was phenomenal.

Director Peter Berg decided in 2005 that a TV series could be chiselled out and as such Friday Night Lights was born on NBC.  Sure there were some similarities to the original movie but it was a new world on its own.  Right away this television show set a precedent.  It is filmed in Texas, the actors live in the towns where they film and their extras are town folk.  The filming techniques are unlike anything currently being exhibited.  The actors don’t have marks and there are three cameramen responsible for shooting the scene in any way they seem fit.  A such they film extremely fast and their performances are more instinctual and accurate than the posing we see on many shows.  It gives the show a unique feel, a honesty not often seen on commercial television.  The script writing is amazing.  The writing staff has managed (largely) to avoid the clichéd and the predictable by going against the grain.  Finding the small moments.  The truth in each scene.  The acting is high calibre too and I will go into that later.

To summarise the show, FNL revolves around the Taylor family.  Eric (Kyle Chandler) is the coach of the Dillon Panthers, his wife Tami (Connie Britton) is the high school counsellor and they have a daughter Julie (Aimee Teegarden).  This tight knit family unit is the most honest depiction of a marriage and family that I have seen on the celluloid.  Any scene that has all of them or a combination of them is exquisite.

The rest of the cast is filled out by members of the team and community.  I am deliberately trying to be vague as not to ruin important plot points.  There is the captain and quarterback of the Panthers, Jason Street (Scott Porter), bad boy Tim Riggins (the delectably scrummy Taylor Kitsch), the fast talking Smash Williams (Gaius Charles) and the nervous second string quarterback Matt Saracen (Zach Gilford).  There are others too – Lyla Garrity (Minka Kelly), the cheerleader and QB’s girlfriend, Tyra Collette (Adrianne Palicki) the “fun” girl and Landry Clark (Jesse Plemmons) best friend of Matt and brain.  This could sound completely formulaic but it isn’t.  An event occurs in the pilot that changes the lives of each and every character I have mentioned and (beware) it will probably make you tear up.  This show has a finger on emotion and whether it is the written word, the performance or the beauty of a scene, this is a show that you will love.

FNL is not a football show.  It’s about a coach and his team but it is NOT all about football.  There are some amazing football scenes shot over the seasons but it’s always about characterisation on this show.   It’s about people, and the people depicted in this show are fascinating. We see the pressure and strain on these teenagers for victory from every element of the community, we see the media spotlight, the simmering race tension and even politics.  And every second of it is enthralling.  Connie Britton (Spin City) is phenomenal and yesterday I read she was again passed over for the Emmy short listing for a second year in a row.  This lady puts her heart and soul into this woman who I would love to know.  Kyle Chandler (Early Edition) is fiery, controlled and downright convincing as the new coach of this team and he’s an actor who can convey so much with so little words.  (There is even a site devoted to the acting ability of his hair, you need to watch to understand).  The ability to convey honesty and conviction through one’s face is a talent that many actors are without and these two are amazing.  So much so that I am appalled they haven’t been recognised for their efforts.  These two are television critic’s darlings and for good reason.

Now this may not have sold you on watching this show or giving it a chance.  It is currently two seasons in with the third starting as part of a Direct TV/NBC deal.  Below are my reasons for loving this show – please give it four episodes, I promise you, you will love it.

1.       The actors act the stuffing out of the script.

2.       The scripts are tight, emotional, true with equal amounts of drama, comedy and honesty.

3.       It looks and feels different than anything else on TV.

4.       The actors are purdy too (for girls and guys alike).

5.       Mud Bowl – if you stick with it you’ll see this incredible episode.

6.       The music.

7.       Kyle.

8.       Connie.

9.       Zach Gilford and his depiction of Matt Saracen.

10.   Anything that comes out of Landry’s mouth, bravo Jesse Plemmons.

11.   The Riggins’ residence

12.   The emotional punch of the pilot.

More importantly there is no star power or “big, flashy concept” behind this show.  This is about showing a family, a team, a community in all it’s flawed glory and you should give it a go.

Now if Connie is out there and reads this (I know she Google alerts FNL items) – I loved your work and know that your performances are valued.  You are amazing. I cannot wait for the new season.  Gushing complete J

Podcasting Pimping

June 25, 2008

The Three Chicks have a great group of friends out there in the ether. They have been lovely enough to praise/mention our podcast during their own and below you will find links to their iTunes locations. They are all worthy of your time and downloading. We love these people and they are part of our regular podcast listening regime.

Geek Out Loud -  place to geek out with friends.  Steve is a great solo host who talks about a plethora of things from comics, movies, tv shows. etc with a great sense of humour and an even better singing voice.  He is also the co-host of the fantastic Smallville orientated podcast Starkville’s House of El and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicle orientated podcast, Skynext.  His blog can be found here.  He has lately counted down his top comic book heroes, he introduced me to the concept of She-Hulk (which I still find laughable) and chocolate pie (don’t ask.) Occasional updates.

Entertainment Overload – our brother podcast in Memphis, Tennessee.  They are your one stop shop for all things in entertainment news from box office takings, Office quotes and their take on that week’s TV and movies.  Justin, Willie and Ben guide you through the perplexities of pop culture with aplomb and make you laugh too!  They also have another podcast, Geekland, centering on all things comic based.  They love us (who wouldn’t?) as we are their Chipettes and we love them, our darling Chipmunks.  Weekly.

Film in Focus – a movie critique podcast that is truly amazing.  They cover the artistic (Cinematography), the classic (Godfather trilogy), to the plain old popcorn fun times (Back to the Future trilogy).  They give you the complete look at movies of yester year and today with a great level of analysis and laughs.  Jason and Danny talk enthusiastically about all aspects of cinema.  They also record a comic book based podcast called The Short Box.  Weekly.

**********************************************

And for some pimping of our own.

Squint Squad – Our own Crystal and Logan (or Crogan as I like to call them) have teamed up to present a Bones orientated podcast.  These girls have a great dynamic and its a great podcast that is both informative and entertaining for the Bones inclined.  Weekly.

Greek Speak – is a  little project of my own focussing on the television show Greek.  Raj and I are only two episodes in but are having a blast covering the exploits of the sororities and fraternities of the fictional Cyprus-Rhodes University. Intended to be weekly :P .

And remember to leave iTunes reviews for all these people so that more people can be made aware of their existence.

This Geek Loves Her Greek

June 18, 2008

Here at 3CM we are going to start posting reviews on aspects of the media and pop culture that we love and want to share.  I am going to start the ball rolling so to speak.

 This Geek Loves Her Greek

There have been three times in my life where I have purchased a season of a television show without having viewed it prior – Veronica Mars, Friday Night Lights and Greek.  My success rate is phenomenal as all three shows are quality productions that made me enjoy television again after a run of cliché, dribble ridden slop fests.  Now that may not be fair but this was before I found a whole plethora of cable programming that made me realise that television is better than movies.  I am not going to talk about all three though (too much gushing is never good for anyone), I am going to try and sell you all on Greek.

Greek has just finished out its first season on ABC Family.  Now don’t let its broadcasting home scare you, this show is all about the sororities and fraternities of the fictional Cyprus-Rhodes University.  Based on appearances this show could seem to be about the hijinks of the frat houses and other superficial goings-on but there is a lot of depth to this show too.  That is due in great part to the addition of Casey and Rusty Cartwright, siblings from Chicago that are our protagonists into this world.  The show begins with Casey in her first year trying to finagle her way into the Zeta Beta Zeta house’s leadership and Rusty, as a Polymer Science majoring freshman intent on pledging to a fraternity.  Casey is the blonde, bubbling stereotypical type that is able to navigate the social intricacies of college life while juggling her boyfriend, Evan and her ex, Cappie.  Rusty however is a geek, he’s brainy as all heck and wants to break free of his nerd-shackles and start anew.  The problem is the boy has about as much social know how as one of the members of that newly discovered tribe in the Amazon.  The cast is filled out nicely with members of Kappa Tau, Omega Chi and ZBZ while showing the non-Greek life in Rusty’s purity pledging room mate.  This show is essentially about family – while college for all of us was about the family we made away from home, this show gives us that aspect plus the addition of the biological too.

Television shows set in college are a rarity.  We, of course, have the programs that extend pass their used by dates and push their cast into unrealistic scenarios where they all attend college together (Dawson’s Creek, 90210, OC, Saved by the Bell, etc).  This show, like Felicity, demonstrated the difficulty individuals face in establishing themselves in a new environment while holding onto their essence.  College is a melting pot of cultures, sexual preferences and religious choices and Greek references this continually.

I could go on and on about the fabulous Scott Michael Foster who plays the charismatic and loveable Cappie, or the red necked, Jesus loving laugh riot that is Clark Duke’s Dale but I would be selling it short.  This show has comedy and drama.  It has its parties sure, but it also addresses the growth that occurs once you attend college, like Casey says in the Pilot “college isn’t black and white like high school”.  She tells the truth, college is a slippery face where you balance studies and a hedonistic lifestyle, or was that just me?  You find yourself away from the eyes of your parents and years of expectation.  Freedom is yours and it is up to you how you choose to use it.  The scene where Rusty drinks tequila for the first time was a complete shout out to my first alcoholic beverage too.  The use of this naive, people pleasing kid as the eyes into this world is entertaining in many ways and Jacob Zachar can swing from supreme disappointment to unbridled joy that you cannot do anything but want his success.  The moment where he confronts an individual that did his sister wrong is a winning moment that can make you bust your gut with pride and laughter.

Is the show a realistic depiction of college life?  Not completely.  What television show is hundred percent accurate?  However this show does something which made me love it.  The pilot introduced characters that were stereotypes and immediately began showing they didn’t necessarily fit into that mould.  The characters on this show have depth and the cast find small moments to assist in this understanding.   Three dimensional characters are never a bad thing. My favourite?  A toss up between the annoying and stanchly religious Dale whose words of wisdom are usually camouflaged by his use of terms like heathen.  I also entirely adore the Kappa Tau president in Cappie, a character that is such a gregarious, charismatic type that you wonder why don’t I have a friend like that?

I love this show with its humour, parties and sometimes sentimental sibling moments enormously.  So much so that I started a podcast with my friend Raj (can be found by searching for Greek Speak on iTunes).  The viewership is small but we are a passionate bunch convinced that the wider world should realise the greatness that is this show.  There might not be robots, super-powered individuals or a crime of the week but there is, at its core, a show with a lot of heart. Something many shows have forgotten is important amongst the time jumps and stunt casting.  Give this geek’s Greek a go.

Episode Three Topics

June 16, 2008

We recorded the second episode of 3CM yesterday and it was a fun experience.  We had some technical difficulties that resulted in me breaking into giggles continuously so I apologise whole heartedly to Jen and Crystal (who I tortured unnecessarily).

We did talk though about the third episode, to be recorded in a fortnight, and what we might cover.  We decided on two of the three topics, hoping you might help with the third.

Our topics will be -

  1. Retro Review – The Babysitter’s Club book series (boys pack your balls for this one!)
  2. Dazed and Confused (movie)
  3. a band.

So as you can see we need help choosing a band to talk about.  Please drop by the forums or add a comment here volunteering a band for us to discuss.  We post the topics ahead of time so that you can watch/read them too and maybe write in your perspective on them and be part of the discussion too.

Entertainment Overload

June 12, 2008

The Boys (or Chipmunks to our Chipettes) host their own podcast called Entertainment Overload.  A great source of information on movies, television, comics and other bits and pieces.  These boys are hilarious, if only because they (or should I say Justin) is convinced that -

  • Jen looks like White Queen from Marvel’s Uncanny X Men.
  • Crystal like Firestar from Marvel’s X Men.
  • Adele sounds like Claire from Lost.

You can find Entertainment Overload and their companion podcast Geekland on iTunes.
